Because of the ability to remove organic flux residue
with water and the ease of disposal of the cleaning
solutions, organic fluxes are frequently used for
electronics soldering applications. Biodegradable, non-acid,
organic fluxes are not as heat stable as rosin
fluxes, but do provide more rapid fluxing action for high
speed wave or drag soldering. Environmentally friendly,
water-based Formula 2220VF is free of volatile organic
compounds (VOCs), which eliminates the need to use
ozone depleting chemicals. It provides maximum
capillary wetting action up plated through-holes, making
it ideal for use on multilayer boards. Solvent-based
Formula 2331ZX is a truly neutral flux, rather than a
self-neutralizing flux. It contains no water, polyglycols or
non-water-soluble solvents, is non-spattering and
environmentally safe. This flux emits no offensive odors
during soldering and is chemically stable in low
temperature storage environments.
Lead-free wave and selective soldering require exposing the flux to slightly higher soldering temperatures. Lead-free alloys traditionally wet metal surfaces more slowly than tin-lead. Kester liquid fluxes for lead-free assembly have new activator packages to enable rapid wetting and hole-filling, ensuing reliable product output. They can be applied to circuit boards by a spray, foam, or dip process.
